FYI

(Per quanto mi riguarda, sostituire la VoR non è certo un delitto, e sí, abbiamo "reso open access" migliaia di articoli. Il senso degli archivi aperti è che non importa molto se una registrazione risieda qui o là.)

-------- Messaggio inoltrato -------- Oggetto: [SCHOLCOMM] Did Wikipedia email authors to "make their papers open access"? Data: Thu, 26 Oct 2017 23:45:33 +0000 Mittente: Jake Orlowitz

Hi all,

There's been some attention and also a little confusion about an independent initiative started by an Italian volunteer editor who emailed thousands of authors asking them to make their papers open access for Wikipedia.

That sounded impossible to me at first--Wikipedia primarily cites the version of record--and more importantly we can't "make anything open access" that isn't already so; we could never host content that isn't already CC BY-SA licensed.

It turns out that the email blitz was a well-intentioned and narrowly targeted effort to encourage authors cited on Wikipedia to do one thing: legally deposit a green OA preprint or other copyright compatible version.

The idea was that if there was a legally deposited version, then Wikipedia volunteers could add that link to Wikipedia citations, *alongside* a url to the version of record (*add, not replace*).

The goal was to give the official, published, peer reviewed citation, but also provide a free-to-read version for those using the site who didn't have access--so that they too could read and verify the citation (albeit likely with a pre-publication version).

OKFN has a full blog post about it, and it's is a pretty good read:
