We, the Jurors of Wiki Loves Monuments 2021, deliver today the result of our selection. In the exceptional times we are living today, it becomes part of our duty to point out a few elements, for clarity and transparency.

Our final selections include pictures of monuments located in Countries which currently are at war against other Countries. In all the involved Countries the Wiki Movement is present with Wikimedians and cultural activities in the aim of making human knowledge available to every person in the World. Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photographic competition, born and developed inside the Wiki Community, to promote historic and cultural sites around the World through Wikimedia projects. And in time it became the biggest photography contest in the World. The most open one: everybody can participate, everybody is welcome to allow anyone to learn about different cultures, different histories and different monuments through pictures sharing the beauty that is inside monuments, inside culture. Culture has no flags, no borders, no territories; no "leaders" are entitled to "own" it or "represent" it, no one ever was in history. Culture belongs to the Human Kind. Cultural items belong to mankind as a whole. Monuments belong to each and every single human being on this Planet. The Countries in which they are located are responsible for preserving them for people coming to learn them from far places and times; they are not "the Countries' monuments", they are milestones of the whole Human journey to civilization. The awarded 2021 pictures were selected before the beginning of the 2022 war. We do confirm our choices today, when this war has started. So, today we are awarding pictures coming from Countries with which current representatives and policies we would refuse contact, interaction, or any kind of proximity; if it wasn't for culture, which has no borders and no owners and no representatives. And no war policies.

Time will solve some issues, time will dissolve anti-human ambitions and ambitious "leaders"; but the current situation is horrific and shocking. People are dying, today, people are crying. People are missing their loved ones; there are already mothers who won't have a corpse to mourn, only the memory of their loved ones' burned youth. Many people are asking why, and they don't get a rational answer; nothing above money, nothing higher than primitive material instincts. Nothing that could ever be related with what certain Cultures brought, as they actually did, so crucially to the common cultural patrimony of mankind. Nothing aimed at progress and civilization. Nothing that could be farther from what Wikimedians do.

We have Wikimedians in each of the involved Countries; and we love them all, we are terribly worried for them, we wish them all the peace that an honest mind can imagine. We are waiting for them to start working together again as soon as possible, in peace. We love them all.

In front of all this, we cannot present our results as we usually do. There is no joy, this year, in celebrating the beauty we asked for from all the photographers who really love the places in which destiny and fate brought them. All this beauty is tainted now with the blood of innocent victims. Yet, culture cannot be stopped by violence, roughness, crudeness. And the ambition of a few will not stop the common rights of people. We will go on, our way. With a reason more to be honest Wikimedians.

We wish we could do more, but we cannot. We can only present our results. Which we worked upon in honesty and neutral spirit; these were the pictures, this is how we found they should have been evaluated.

Our hearts are bleeding. Our emotions are atrocious. But our principles are stronger and brighter than all that.
