Subject: [Wikidata] Data donation from ISSN Internation Center - feedback
welcome
To: Discussion list for the Wikidata project <wikidata(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello
The ISSN International Center, which maintains the ISSN Register (*the most
complete reference source for the identification of serial publications*)
at http://portal.issn.org wishes to *contribute a subset of its
bibliographic database to Wikidata*.
This consists of (approximately) *1.100.000 serial publications notices*
(only current/not discontinued publications), with 10% having 2 or more
ISSNs (typically, paper and electronic version). Currently, Wikidata
contains approximately 94000 ISSN values.
Each serial notice is described with metadata from the set of metadata
already freely available from the ISSN Portal :
- ISSN identifier
- ISSN-L identifier (the ISSN-L identifies the serial publication
independantly of its medium, while distinct ISSNs are assigned to each
medium)
- Proper (original) title of the serial
- Key (unambiguous) title of the serial
- Country of publication
- Distribution format (of a given ISSN)
- URL (for online publications)
- Language of the serial
*(Note that the publisher is not part of the free data).*
More information can be read in this presentation.
<https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1vJrfj3zOKTw-29QYp2RyBxkJUlHVk_VKWzn…>
Preliminary analysis has been conducted and a data model proposal to
capture this set of metadata has been submitted at
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Periodicals#Data_do…
(Wikidata Periodicals and Wiki Source Projects have been notified)
Feedback on this is welcome until 4th of december (although not a formal
deadline), either here or on wiki at the link above.
We also welcome general advice on how to proceed with an ingest of this
size (the plan is currently to use OpenRefine to reconcile and import).
Best Regards
Thomas

Subject: [DIGLIB] Open cultural heritage collections & institutions by
digital means: A webinar series!
To: <diglib(a)infoserv.inist.fr>
Dear all,
Open GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives & museums) is an international
movement around open cultural heritage data. This webinar series is
focusing on how museums and other cultural heritage institutions can open
up towards their audiences with the help of digital data and media. The aim
is that visitors can use data and become active participants within the
institution. Both Swedish and international speakers present their work in
the context of digital cultural heritage data. Have a look at the program
to discover more!
This series is based on the aspects:
1. Museum and cultural heritage institution staff members, as well as
the interested public (such as students), will have the chance to exchange
thoughts on digital openness in the sector and discuss ideas and examples.
2. An important aspect of the series is the assumption that digital
openness in museums and cultural heritage institutions is a perspective:
Institutions can strive towards digital openness, but this means constant
work – with changing technologies and shifting standards. This also means
that every kind of institution can take part in this series, small or
large, beginners or advanced participants in the open GLAM discussion.
Everyone should be able to talk frankly about successful and failed digital
activities – so others can learn from those experiences.
3. As this is a webinar series, everyone can take part from their desk.
Especially small institutions do not always have the resources to
participate in conferences and – as a result – important discussions. This
is also a possibility for more diverse discussions on digital openness in
the sector.

Subject: [InfoLit-L] Two webinars for Global media Media and Information
Literacy Week
To: Information literacy and information skills teaching discussion list <
lis-infoliteracy(a)jiscmail.ac.uk>, <infolit-l(a)infoserv.inist.fr>
As part of the University of Sheffield Information School celebrations of
Global MIL Week (24-31 October,
https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/globalmilweek ) we are holding two
webinars, following this year's MIL week theme of "Media and Information
Literate Citizens: Informed, Engaged, Empowered". They are both 30 minutes
(20 minute presentation + 10 minutes discussion) and open to anyone to
attend (using Blackboard Collaborate). We set up an eventbrite for each of
them in case you want calendar/reminders, but you don't have to register.
Firstly at 11am-11.30am UK time, Thursday 24 October 2019 (check the time
in your country at https://tinyurl.com/globalmila) Dr Pamela McKinney, will
talk about research which aimed to discover what data is tracked by people
in three communities (parkrunners, people with type 2 diabetes and people
with Irritable Bowel Syndrome). She will also discuss why the data was
tracked, and the barriers to safe and effective tracking, particularly in
relation to information literacy. Respondents were confident in their
abilities to understand tracked data, and how this enabled them to achieve
their health goals. However, critical to Information literacy is an
understanding of the potential re-use and sharing of data by third parties,
and respondents demonstrated much less awareness of this.
To join Pam's webinar go to https://tinyurl.com/globalmilabb just before
the webinar start time. It uses Blackboard Collaborate (see
https://help.blackboard.com/Collaborate/v12/Participant/Join_a_Session for
details on how to use it). You do not have to register for the webinar in
advance, but if you’d like to sign up via Eventbrite and get reminders that
it is coming up, go to https://tinyurl.com/globalmilae
Then at 4pm-4.30pm UK time, Tuesday 29th October (check the time in your
country at https://tinyurl.com/globalmilb ) I will be talking on
*Transformational Media and Information Literacy learning for adult
citizens: “this street is full of heroes”,*
I'll be outlining use of theories from adult education (Transformation
Theory and the notion of public pedagogy) and information science
(Information Ground theory) to address the challenge of engaging adult
citizens critically and transformationally with media and Information
Literacy. As the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) concept matures, it
is important to expand the MIL focus to the majority of the population who
are not in formal education. The title quotation is from a poem by Benjamin
Zephaniah (transformed to street art in Sheffield) which inspires us to
think of each citizen as a potential MIL hero.
To join this webinar go to https://tinyurl.com/globalmilbbb just before the
webinar start time. The Eventbrite link is https://tinyurl.com/globalmilbe

Buongiorno a tutti,
nell'ambito delle attività promosse per la la Giornata europea delle
lingue, organizzate dal centro di documentazione europea dell'Università di
Teramo, è stato inserito un Workshop di traduzione dall'italiano di alcune
voci dedicate a Teramo e provincia e all'Abruzzo, da farsi su Wikipedia,
Cari saluti a tutti.
Carla
