Open Culture Atlas: che strada possiamo fare insieme?
by francesca santarelli 24 Mar '15

24 Mar '15

by Eusebia Parrotto 03 Mar '15

03 Mar '15

Fwd: New recommendations outline ways to strengthen Europeana’s future relationship with Wikimedia

-------- Messaggio inoltrato -------- Oggetto: New recommendations outline ways to strengthen Europeana’s future relationship with Wikimedia Data: Mon, 23 Feb 2015 16:41:18 GMT Mittente: Stevie Benton New recommendations outline ways to strengthen Europeana’s future relationship with Wikimedia The Europeana logo <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Europeana_logo_black.svg> /This post was written by Liam Wyatt and was originally published here <http://pro.europeana.eu/blogpost/new-recommendations-outline-ways-to-streng…>. Re-used with kind permission./ In light of the Europeana 2020 strategic plan <http://strategy2020.europeana.eu/>, what shape should Europeana’s relationship to Wikipedia and the wider Wikimedia community take in the years to come? To find an answer to this question, a Europeana Network Task Force <http://pro.europeana.eu/network/task-forces> was formed with a mix of people drawn from the Europeana network of GLAMs as well as active members of the Wikimedia community. It was chaired by Jesse de Vos from the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, now at Wikimedia Netherlands, and had a clear mission to reach final recommendations that benefited both Europeana and Wikimedia. Together, the group has produced a report <http://pro.europeana.eu/documents/858566/7e831a12-cb28-4372-adb3-b57154a8f1…> outlining ten ways in which Europeana and Wikimedia can build on their successful cooperation. The first task was to create an overview of all past Wikimedia activities that Europeana has had involvement in. This list of past and current projects <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Europeana/Projects> was built on-wiki (where else?) and shows very clearly the depth and breadth of the existing relationship. The second half of the six-month review then focused on developing 10 strategic recommendations which would make this relationship even stronger over the next five years. “Europeana has a long standing relationship with the Wiki community. With the development of the GLAMwiki Toolset <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:GLAMwiki_Toolset>, publishing to Wikimedia has become an intrinsic part of our publication policy and we would like to expand on this relationship for the benefit of our data partners. The recommendations in the report of the taskforce amplify that ambition, and we will investigate how we can act upon each of them.” (Harry Verwayen, Europeana Foundation) This can be achieved by considering a Wikimedia-component to both current and future projects. Europeana can also play an important role by enhancing relationships between GLAMs and the Wikimedia network, as well as sharing knowledge about practices in each of these communities. An important aspect of the report was the recommendation that Europeana further integrate its systems and technology with Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms. Wikidata <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Main_Page> is a key part of this, as a fast-growing project with enormous potential for linking collections, carrying out authority control, and synergy with Europeana’s systems. The introduction of a dedicated Wikimedia coordinator and ‘product owner’ was another significant outcome. The creation of this position means that each of the ten recommendations can be fulfilled to their full potential. This new team member can also look at the opportunities to integrate Wikimedia in each of the major forthcoming Europeana projects, such as “1914-18”, “Sounds” and “Fashion”. A final element to the report considers the possibilities for cooperation between Europeana and Wikimedia as they seek external funding for projects, with the possibility of Europeana becoming Wikimedia’s first movement-partner <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_affiliation_models/Movement_Partn…>. Each of the different strands to the report offers groundwork for exciting developments that can form future planning, and we would like to thank all members of the Task Force, as well as numerous others who gave their valuable insights during the creation of this report. * <http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.wikimedia.org.uk%2F…> * <http://twitter.com/home?status=New%20recommendations%20outline%20ways%20to%…> * <https://plus.google.com/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.wikimedia.org.uk%2F201…> * <http://www.reddit.com/submit?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.wikimedia.org.uk%2F2015…> * <mailto:?subject=New%20recommendations%20outline%20ways%20to%20strengthen%20Europeana%E2%80%99s%20future%20relationship%20with%20Wikimedia&body=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.wikimedia.org.uk%2F2015%2F02%2Fnew-recommendations-outline-ways-to-strengthen-europeanas-future-relationship-with-wikimedia%2F%20-%20This%20post%20was%20written%20by%20Liam%20Wyatt%20and%20was%20originally%20published%20here.%20Re-used%20with%20kind%20permission.%20In%20light%20of%20the%20Europeana%202020%20strategic%20plan%2C%20what%20shape%20should%20Europeana%E2%80%99s%20relationship%20to%20Wikipedia%20and%20the%20wider%20Wikimedia%20community%20take%20in%20the%20years%20to%20come%3F%20To%20find%20an%20answer%20to%20this%20question%2C%20a%20Europeana%20Network%20Task%20Force%20was>

by Federico Leva (Nemo) 10 Feb '15

10 Feb '15

In particolare, si tratta di partecipare a un bando di 4 milioni di dollari, che è accessibile per enti di tutto il mondo ma solo se coadiuvati da un ente statunitense («While the partici pation of institutions outside the United States is highly desirable, due to CLIR’s limited capacity to administer grants it is necessary to require that all projects be led by U.S. - based institutions that take responsibility for the direction and fiscal m anagement of each award»). Nemo -------- Messaggio inoltrato -------- Oggetto: $4 Million Available for Digitization in 2015 Application Deadline is April 30th Let’s Apply Together! Data: Tue, 10 Feb 2015 17:44:14 +0000 Mittente: Jeff Kaplan $4 Million Available for Digitization in 2015 Application Deadline is April 30th Let’s Apply Together! *Internet Archive wants to partner with you to bring your ‘Hidden Collections’ into the public domain and become part of a global digital library!* The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) <http://www.clir.org/> with generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation <http://www.mellon.org/> has launched Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives: Enabling New Scholarship through Increasing Access to Unique Materials <http://www.clir.org/hiddencollections>. This competition will award up to $4 Million to institutions, consortia and collaborative groups to digitize and provide access to collections of rare and ephemeral material with high scholarly value. CLIR endeavors that “Digitizing Hidden Collections <http://www.clir.org/about/news/pressrelease/mellonHCdigitize> will enhance the emerging global digital research environment in ways that support new kinds of scholarship for the long term, ensuring that the full wealth of resources held by institutions of cultural memory becomes integrated with the open Web” (http://www.clir.org/hiddencollections/about-the-program).The focus of these grants is to bring entire collections into the public domain, while promoting strategic partnerships and best practices for ensuring preservation and accessibility that is both stable and enduring. Grants of between $50,000 and $250,000 for a single-institution project, or between $50,000 and $500,000 for a collaborative project may be sought for work beginning between January 1st and June 1st, 2016 and be completed by May 31st, 2019. The images can even be captured by you! We have a new Table Top Scribe <https://archive.org/details/tabletopscribesystem> system that can be purchased if your institution wishes to do the image capture in-house. It is portable, easy to use, and uploads material directly to archive.org <https://archive.org/>. This also provides opportunities to submit a grant proposal where the content might be located in 2 or 3 different libraries. *Let’s think big and make collections vital for scholarship and cultural heritage available to the world!* *Want to know more?* Attend the the upcoming webinars for applicants on February 4th and March 4th, 2015 from 2-3pm Eastern Time.
