One problem I have with these approaches is that it makes potential new editors think all they have to do is click a couple of things, write some text, and "presto!" -- they are a new editor.
But that's not how Wikipedia works.
I think the crucial thing missing is the recognition that Wikipedia is a social encyclopedia. You're not going to get anything done properly or learn anything if you don't know how to interact with other Wikipedians. I feel that is the reason I run into so many people who vent frustration at finding their edits reverted. If they knew to engage existing editors BEFORE THEY START EDITING, maybe they could have crafted their initial contributions differently.
If I was coaching someone or giving a workshop, I'd want to introduce people to a variety of talk pages, to active WikiProjects, to articles that have extensive talk pages so they can get a sense of the active community that is behind Wikipedia and not be afraid to join and participate in it. Once they start editing, they know to expect and anticipate feedback which can lead to learning how to edit and write acceptable articles.

My experience is that however nervous people are of changing text, they become very confident when asked to choose which of twenty pictures should be used to illustrate a Wikipedia article. Because Commons is so heavily skewed to the UK it was easy to get a list of articles with UK geocodes but without pictures, and half of them had suitable pictures already on Commons (more than half once we learned to avoid nature reserves).
Unfortunately the editor who created the list for me has been blocked for a year so the list is slightly stale, and more seriously with the UK no longer being a payment processor I can't invite a new crop of London donors and need to find a new source of complete newbies.

Hi Phoebe,
There are some resources here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Training/For_educators/Resources
I generally hand out some of the education program brochures (how to edit Wikipedia, which is soon to be updated, and now the Commons booklet, too) at events, which we have at the office or can probably be sent to you by LiAnna Davis from the education program.
Hope that helps some. So far the education program has developed the best and simplest tools, and modules, however, many are also online.

Hi all,
Does anyone have an example of a "here's how to get started" handout for brand-new editors at an editing workshop?
I'm thinking along the lines of a 1 page document... step 1, create an account; step 2, add a userpage, step 3, try a copyediting task... etc.
I've found this guide... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/BeginnersGuide
But am wondering if there are any other examples, or anyone's made a printable/shorter version. I'm sure I've seen something like this, but can't find it!
Thanks, -- Phoebe
